Organic Cotton vs Bamboo Baby Clothing — Which Should You Choose?

Organic Cotton vs Bamboo Baby Clothing — Which Should You Choose?

Organic and bamboo baby clothing at Baby Nook New Westminster

If you have spent any time shopping for baby clothing you have already noticed that organic cotton and bamboo are everywhere. Both are marketed as the natural, safe choice for baby's sensitive skin — but they are actually very different materials with different strengths.

At Baby Nook we carry both, and we get asked about this constantly in store. Here is our honest breakdown.

What Is Organic Cotton?

Organic cotton is cotton grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. It is certified by third-party bodies like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) to ensure the farming and manufacturing process meets strict environmental and safety standards.

For baby clothing, organic cotton means no toxic chemical residues against newborn skin — which matters enormously when babies spend 16+ hours a day in their clothing. It is breathable, durable, and gets softer with every wash.

💡 What to look for: Look for GOTS certification on organic cotton clothing. This ensures the certification covers the entire supply chain — not just the farming.

What Is Bamboo?

Bamboo fabric (usually labelled bamboo viscose or bamboo rayon) is made from bamboo pulp that has been chemically processed into fibres. The bamboo plant itself is sustainable — it grows fast, requires no pesticides, and uses little water — but the manufacturing process involves chemicals.

The end result is a fabric that is extraordinarily soft, naturally moisture-wicking, and temperature-regulating. Bamboo clothing feels silky smooth against skin, which is why it is so popular for sleepwear and next-to-skin layers.

Head to Head Comparison

Price Mid range Mid to higher range

Which Should You Buy?

For newborns and babies with very sensitive skin, bamboo is often the gentler choice. The silky texture and moisture-wicking properties make it ideal for sleepwear and anything worn directly against skin all day.

For daywear, outerwear, and gifting, organic cotton is the more practical choice. It is more durable, holds up better through repeated washing, and the GOTS certification gives you confidence about the full supply chain.

Honest answer: you do not have to choose. Most parents end up with both and use them for different purposes. Bamboo sleepsac for nighttime, organic cotton onesie for the day.
